The Forgotten Kingdom Beneath the Jungle

Discovering Ritigala

Deep in the heart of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province lies a place where time feels suspended, where the whispers of ancient monks mingle with the rustling leaves of the jungle — Ritigala. Cloaked in dense forest and shrouded in mist for much of the year, this mysterious mountain range hides the ruins of a once-great monastic complex, forgotten for centuries beneath nature’s embrace.

A Mountain of Mystery

Ritigala rises dramatically above the surrounding plains, its tallest peak reaching over 760 meters. Its unique microclimate — cool, damp, and perpetually green — contrasts sharply with the dry plains below. This climate nurtures a wealth of rare plant species, many believed to have medicinal properties. In fact, ancient legends claim that Ritigala was part of the Himalayan mountains dropped by the monkey god Hanuman during his quest for healing herbs in the Indian epic Ramayana.

The Ancient Monastery

Archaeological evidence dates the site back to at least the 1st century BCE, when it served as a forest monastery for ascetic Buddhist monks who practiced Pamsukulika traditions — living in extreme simplicity, cut off from worldly distractions. Ritigala’s layout is unlike other ancient sites in Sri Lanka:

  • Stone-paved pathways snake through the jungle, connecting bathing ponds, meditation platforms, and ruined monastic residences.
  • No large stupas or image houses dominate the complex; instead, the focus was on seclusion and meditation rather than public worship.
  • Massive stone bridges and retaining walls still stand, showcasing the engineering prowess of ancient builders who worked in harmony with the mountain’s terrain.

Legends and Lore

The monks of Ritigala were renowned for their strict discipline and herbal knowledge. Local folklore speaks of a hidden kingdom at Ritigala, ruled by guardian spirits and accessible only to the pure of heart. Ancient chronicles also recount how King Sena I sought refuge here during times of political turmoil, adding a layer of royal intrigue to the site’s history.

Nature’s Fortress

Today, Ritigala is a Strict Nature Reserve, protecting its rare biodiversity and archaeological heritage. Trekking through its shaded trails, visitors are greeted by towering trees, the calls of unseen birds, and an occasional glimpse of wild deer or monkeys. The air is cooler, fresher — as if the mountain itself is guarding its secrets.

A Journey Off the Beaten Path

Visiting Ritigala is unlike touring Sri Lanka’s more famous heritage sites. There are no bustling crowds or souvenir stalls — just a quiet communion with history and nature. It’s a destination for the curious traveler, the history enthusiast, and the seeker of serene landscapes.

Walking its moss-covered stones, you can almost hear the chanting of monks from centuries past, feel the meditative stillness that once defined this sacred ground, and sense that Ritigala’s story is still unfolding — waiting for modern explorers to discover it anew.
